Nipple Reduction Surgery

Both nipple and areola undergo significant changes after pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. A common complaint among patients is the darkening of the nipple-areola complex, which is associated with nipple lengthening and areola widening. The colour is easily managed using a combination of lightening creams, oral tablets and laser therapy.

Misshapen, disproportionate or asymmetrical nipples, meanwhile, can be addressed through nipple reduction surgery. This procedure aims to correct the patient’s nipples back to their ideal proportions. In terms of size, the ideal nipple size is around 8mm in height and width.

Traditional techniques of nipple reduction involve cutting part or the whole of the nipple tip. However, such techniques often lead to loss of nipple sensation post-procedure. Hence, Dr. Leo uses his own modified technique, which virtually eliminates the risk of reduction in nipple sensation.

In our modified technique, only the skin of the nipple is excised. The sensory nerves are hence left intact. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes around 45 minutes to complete. It uses absorbable sutures, eliminating the need for a stitch removal appointment. Wounds should be kept covered with a waterproof dressing for 1-2 weeks or until they completely heal. Strenuous sports and swimming should be avoided for 1-2 weeks to optimize healing.

Widened, puffy or asymmetrical areolas can also be corrected at the same time as nipple reduction.
